Fatih Kenger & Evren Yankı Yuzer, FLE Junior Students 2015
Lesson Overview
Before writing the reflection part of this task I want to summarize shortly my lesson plan.First, the learner profile of my students was that they were 20, A1 level, 6th grade public school students. Moreover, the grammar topic were ‘’there’s/ there’re’’.In addition, the type of teaching was PowerPoint Presentation. The lesson was pronunciation integrated. Under the light of these factors, the previous knowledge of students was determined as Simple present, Simple past, Simple future tense, the use of some/ any/ a/ an(indefinite articles), countable and uncountable nouns.
Anticipated Problems
1. There could be harmful and contagious misbehaviors of students because of their age, The teacher will immediately correct this misbehavior.
2. The students may not be willing to attend to the lesson; the teacher will catch students’ attention by engaging them in the activities.
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, the student/s will have been able to,
1. Practice use of ‘there’s/ there’re’ structures in positive, negative and questions forms,
2. Pronounce the word patterns and sentences stress,
3. Express and understand the descriptions of their room, houses or neighborhood, and work collaboratively and communicatively on the activities.
Presentation
First,
The teacher comes to the classroom and he talks with students about interesting events in their lives to warm up students to the lesson.
After warm up section,
he introduces a secret case stating that he found it while repairing his bicycle. A volunteer student comes and opens the case and fins a letter that is from the father of teacher.
Then,
teacher distributes the copies of letter to the students after giving instructions about the activity they will do. To engage all students, he says all students will read one or two sentences while the volunteer student shows the materials in the case. While they are reading the teacher gives attention to their pronunciation.
After this part,
the teacher writes the structures on the board by giving emphasis on pronunciation and sentence stress. Also before writing the structures of ‘’there’s/ there’re’’, the teacher ask the concept check questions.
The Presentation stage ends here.
Practice
The teacher introduces jazz chant which is very enjoyable and hard to compose for me. To make the students easily acquire the structure and to give emphasis on sentence stress, the teacher uses a rhythmic and enjoyable jazz chant. Because of being pronunciation integrated of lesson, this jazz chant activity has a remarkable importance.
Then,
in order to provide controlled practice to students, the teacher distributes a handout including a dialogue that students are required to fill in the blanks with the forms of ‘’there’s/ there’re’’ structures. Teacher asks for answers and use different kinds of error correction techniques like error repetition, grammar recast, clarification request etc.
Production
The teacher gives an info-gap activity to students. The rationale of this activity is to make students work communicatively and collaboratively. And info-gap activities are very important in terms of designing according to level, age and interests of students. The students will express the sentences orally because fluency is emphasized during production stage in our lesson.
Then,
students will prepare a time capsule by putting some objects in a box and writing letter as a group. This activity is a group work activity and the aim of the time capsule is to make students work collaboratively and communicatively. The students will write letters to use the structures accurately and by writing. As a contingency plan they will compose a jazz chant all together by using ‘’there’s/ there’re’’ structures.
Self- Evaluation
When I think about my lesson plan as a whole it well serves to the aim of the lesson. In a pronunciation integrated and communicative lesson, the teacher needs to give emphasis on speaking activities like jazz chant and group/pair work activities.
At the presentation stage, the secret case is very surprising. With an amazing start, the teacher can easily motivate and engage all students in learning. In my micro-teaching, I didn’t hope that my students would like it much but they did. According to evaluation papers I took from my friends, this secret case is perfectly very creative beginning for a lesson.
The jazz chant gathered so much clapping that I again surprised. I realized that enjoyable activities for students are always attention catching and engaging. I also didn’t hope that my students would like it much, but they did. While preparing this jazz chant I gave attention to that it should be both rhythmic-and-enjoyable and suitable for students’ level. Also using the sentences of the letter coming from teacher’s father in jazz chant make the activity very familiar and easy to be fulfilled.
Also the info-gap activity has a remarkable importance in my teaching. We did prepare the activity paper on our own. With an artistic drawing talent, my partner drew the papers and they were loved by our friends and teacher. Again in order to create a collaborative and communicative activity to our students we decided to use/prepare such an info-gap activity.
Actually when I think overall, my expectation was low about my lesson plan. But I think and I understood that preparing your own activities and materials according to the mentioned factors that may affect your instruction is always better and affective than using prepared materials and activities. Moreover, bringing and using real materials in the teaching affect the lesson positively.
Other issues that I didn’t mention widely are concept check questions, sentence stress, fluency, grammar rules, error correction and feedback etc… These factors are very important for lesson plan and instruction.
To conclude, I learned that all the topics we covered in our Teaching Language Skills course has a huge amount of significance both in creating lesson plan and instruction. I realized that this lesson plan and micro teaching task became a zipped form of our course in my mind.
