Graduate Reflections: Teaching adult learners

by Zeynep Ceyhan, METU FLE 2013

Hi everyone!

I am a graduate of METU FLE and I have been working as an English teacher in a language school in Kocaeli since September, 2013. I want to share my experiences and feelings about that.

When I entered the class first day, I was so nervous and did not remember anything about the methods and techniques. However, they are already in my mind, so I used them even in the first lesson. We have a criteria-based system in the school, so it is easier for me to use communicative techniques.

I am teaching to adults, some of them are university students, some are workers and some are managers and soldiers. I have mixed classes and I was stressed about how to teach them at the beginning, I mean their lives, their interests and many other things are so different, but it is not so hard. I mean, if you choose proper activities and communicative in a positive way, there is nothing impossible! Can you imagine a manager walking around in the class and asking questions so as to meet classmates or a soldier singing in the class while playing taboo? J Being a teacher is not easy but so entertaining and satisfying.

As a METU FLE graduate, I am aware of the problems related to language learning. Therefore, I usually use communicative activities. I feel happy when my students speak English although they make mistakes. The moment when they say something in English or they admire you, you feel so relaxed and happy. I hope we will teach English –I mean how to communicate- around Turkey and maybe around the world. Wherever we are or whenever it is, we are still members of METU and we will do our best. 🙂
